Working song / poem… Inspired during my daily walk through the Canton/ New Hartford Reservoir with my hound, Reece and darling 7 month old daughter, Melody Anne. I was frustrated about the construction blocking our path. I know it won’t last forever but it reminded me of when they cut off the rest of the paths after 9-11 due to fear of water supply invasion. It made me wonder why so many big decisions are made based upon fear. What would happen if this pattern continued to manifest until we had nothing left. The “colors” in this poem symbolize the freedoms we still have and the more obvious- what the world would look like if our beautiful reservoirs and parks were buried in cement for lots and buildings.
If the World Turned Grey
If they took it all and left you alone
would you stand up tall
fight for the colors
as they fall
or would you, like the rest
just fade away?
if the world turned grey
How far would you roam?
Would you leave the comforts of your home,
return to the earth where you belong
or would you give up your only song?
if the world turned grey
Would you let your heart mend?
Tell your truth to your dearest friend,
swallow it down like a bitter pill
or hold your breath ‘till the very end?
if the world turned grey
What memories would there remain?
Desires frozen with the rain.
If you lost the ones you love
would you close your heart to the Spirit up above?
if the world turned grey
Would you capture the moments
as they pass?
Or ignore them all
like the fog stained glass
on my windows
neglected on the porch?
if the world turned grey
If they took it all and left you alone
would you stand up tall
fight for the colors
as they fall
or would you, like the rest
just fade away?
if the world turned grey
