You often hear the common expression, “you can’t fit God in a box”! But is this true? Yes and no. God’s saving grace and miraculous healing cannot be limited to a certain set of beliefs, religious or non-religious… spiritual or atheistic… because God loves ALL of creation, how can he/she fit into our systematic theologies accept when it is to appease or humor us. The famous, “Gospel in Chairs” depiction of God’s relentless love pursuit of each and every one of us, tells the story in such a way that, very often, won’t be told on your average Sunday Morning pulpit no matter what denomination. Why not? Well because it’s just scandalous grace. It’s the truth of who God is, expressed through Jesus and many do know want to hear it. In this fast paced “do-it-yourself” society, we love formulas and programs: “Get rich fast” and “12 Steps to Spiritual Growth” . But id that what the word of God taught us? Since Jesus is the word made flesh, how can any proclaimed “Christain” say that their way of worship is the “only” way? Didn’t Jesus say, “In my house there are many mansions?”
Look at the symbolism there. In Jewish culture back then, everything was told in allegory and symbols. Swedenborg, a Swedish Christian theologian, scientist, and mystic, says the “mansions” represent various religious rituals and belief systems that God allows to continue in heaven so long as they are good for the kingdom.
Here is the shortest rendition of the “Gospel in Chairs” I could find….
